On President Obama’s speech on Counterterrorism policy at National Defense University on 23 May 2013

The government of Pakistan has taken note of the counterterrorism strategy outlined by President Obama in his speech on 23 May 2013.

Pakistan appreciates President Obama’s acknowledgement that “force alone cannot make us safer”. This also has been Pakistan’s longstanding stance that a comprehensive strategy was required to address the root causes that foster terrorism and extremism.

At the outset let me express our shared sense of national pride on the conduct of democratic elections, which witnessed a high participation of the people of Pakistan. As you are aware that more than 350 foreign election observers were invited to observe the General Election 2013. They were facilitated by the Foreign Office, Election Commission of Pakistan and the Ministry of Interior. The largest contingent came from the European Union. The head of EU Observer Mission and accompanying members of European Parliament called on the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary. After the elections, the European Union’s Election Observer Mission has concluded in its preliminary statement which you have all seen. The Mission commended Pakistan’s strong commitment to the democratic process.

Happy Mother's Day.

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.
